One week after Marian Hossa said the chances of signing with the Thrashers before the trade deadline were very slim, Don Waddell officially closed the door.

Waddell and Hossa met Friday at the team hotel in Toronto for a one-on-one update on the situation. Saturday morning, Waddell acknowledged that signing Hossa to a contract extension before Tuesday wasn’t an option.

Avs sign Brett Clark to a 2-year extension

The Colorado Avalanche has signed defenceman Brett Clark to a 2-year contract extension.

DENVER (AP) -The Colorado Avalanche signed defenseman Brett Clark to a two-year contract extension through the 2009-10 season.

Clark, 30, set career highs with 82 games, 10 goals and 29 assists last season.

“Brett has been an instrumental part of our team’s overall success,” general manager Francois Giguere said Monday. “He’s been a steady, dependable asset to our defensive group and we expect him to be a strong contributor to this club in the coming seasons.

Clark led he NHL in shifts per game with 35.1 last season, and he had 210 blocked shots, best on the team and fourth in the NHL.

He was the only Avalanche defenseman to appear in all 82 games last year and has played in 143 consecutive games, dating to Nov. 23, 2005.

Panthers re-sign Weiss for 6 years

Florida Panthers General Manager and Head Coach Jacques Martin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with C Stephen Weiss on a six-year contract extension.

Weiss joins a growing list of players who own multi-year deals that include Olli Jokinen, Nathan Horton, Tomas Vokoun, Brett McLean, Radek Dvorak, Richard Zednik, Jozef Stumpel, Ville Peltonen, Ruslan Salei, Mike Van Ryn, Bryan Allen, Cory Murphy and Craig Anderson.”
